DENVER -- Oct. 23, 2008 -- The Starz Denver Film Festival (SDFF) announced the Green Initiative for SDFF 31 to emphasize reducing waste, in addition to maintaining the carbon neutral status of the 2007 Festival.

This year's Green Initiative efforts will be evident both inside and outside of the theaters: official Festival receptions and lounges will use 100 percent recyclable and compostable Eco-Products; all Festival merchandise is made from organic or recycled materials and screened with soy-based inks; Festival patrons can reduce waste by recycling and reusing their Festival guides, rather than disposing of them; and vehicles used by Festival transportation staff will be either hybrid or fuel efficient vehicles.

Festival patrons will also be able to donate to the Carbon Offset program at the point of purchase, with the Denver Film Society matching all funds raised. At the closing of the Festival, Sustainable Travel International will calculate the total carbon footprint created by the Festival. Donations to the Carbon Offset program will be given to various environmental projects that aid in the reduction of climate-altering activities in other locations to counterbalance the environmental impact of the Festival.

"Being the 'Greenest Film Festival' is important to us," said Britta Erickson, SDFF director. "We try to educate the public on important social and cultural issues through films at the Festival and it's important for us to set a good example with our eco-friendly practices."

In 2007, SDFF purchased 375.75 tons of industry-certified carbon offsets, making the Festival completely carbon neutral.
