Based on the acclaimed novel by C. D. Payne, this coming-of-age comedy puts an outrageous spin on the timeless tale of rebellious young love. Michael Cera (Juno, SDFF 30; Superbad) stars as Nick Twisp, a quirky teen with a taste for the finer things in life, like Sinatra, Fellini – and the beautiful, free-spirited Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday), with whom he falls hopelessly in love while on a family vacation.
But with so much, including geography and jealous ex-lovers, to keep the would-be couple apart, drastic measures must be taken. Egged on by Sheeni, Nick abandons his dull, predictable life and develops a rebellious alter ego, complete with ascot, moustache, and cigarette: François. François, who will stop at nothing to be with Sheeni, leads Nick headlong into unpredictable snarls with uproarious consequences.
Working with an all-star cast that includes Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta, Mary Kay Place, Fred Willard, and M. Emmet Walsh as well as Justin Long and Zach Galifianakis, director Miguel Arteta shows once again his flair for dark-streaked comedies; to his credit are not only such indie features as Star Maps, Chuck and Buck, and The Good Girl but also episodes of Freaks and Geeks, Six Feet Under, and The Office.
