At eighteen, Victoria (Emily Blunt) is the object of a royal power struggle. Her uncle, King William (Jim Broadbent), is dying and Victoria is in line for the throne. Everyone is vying to win her favor. Yet both her overbearing mother, The Duchess of Kent (Miranda Richardson), and her ambitious advisor, Conroy (Mark Strong), keep interfering. Victoria hates them both. When her mother invites Victoria’s handsome cousin Albert (Rupert Friend) for a visit, it's immediately obvious that he has been coached to win her hand. At first she's annoyed, as she has no intention of being married – she never wants to be controlled again. But as it happens, Albert is also tired of being manipulated by his relatives – including his own father, King Leopold (Thomas Kretschmann). Talking openly and sincerely of their situation, Victoria and Albert become friends. Upon his return, Leopold continues to push Albert to woo her – but he knows she’s not ready, especially since Lord Melbourne (Paul Bettany) remains in the picture as well. Still, is it possible that Victoria’s alliance (and dalliance) with Albert may actually determine the strength of her reign? For this sumptuous period romance, director Jean-Marc Vallée has teamed up with screenwriter Julian Fellowes, the Oscar-winning author of Gosford Park.
