Francesca Gregorini directs this indie thriller starring Jessica Biel and Alfred Molina, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Emanuel, on the verge of turning 18, is caustic but sensitive. She lives with her father and stepmother—her mother died giving birth to her—and she’s never cared for birthdays for that reason. She lashes out at those around her, unhappy with the life she’s been given. Emanuel blames herself for her mother’s death, yet yearns for a maternal presence in her life. Enter the mysterious Linda, a young and hip mother who moves in next door. Linda bears an uncanny resemblance to Emanuel’s late mother, and the teen becomes infatuated with her.

Emanuel begins to babysit for Linda’s newborn daughter, and as they spend more time together, they develop a bond. When Emanuel discovers a secret about Linda’s baby, her natural self-confidence wavers, and while she decides to keep Linda’s secret safe from those around her, she is drawn deeper and deeper into her neighbor’s bizarre fantasy world. When the situation threatens to spin out of control, Emanuel must take a courageous voyage to help Linda escape from her dreamland.

Biel takes on an uncharacteristic role as a young mother, while Kaya Scodelario as Emanuel sings in her breakout role. The Truth About Emanuel is a stylized, darkly humorous thriller that wavers between the real and the surreal. Combining pain and poetry, Gregorini’s script navigates the complex relationships we share with our loved ones.
