Low-budget but highly charged, stark but saturated, Denis Côté’s feature debut is a sharply rendered portrait of alienation. Christian is a man in trouble—occupying a no-man’s land between compassion and violence, escape and acceptance. When he leaves the big city of Montreal for a job as a garbage collector in a small town, he knows his days are numbered. So does the audience, for whom tension builds and builds amid sparse dialogue and Côté’s penchant for absorbing realism.
