When a reviewer for ultra-snarky Gawker dubs a movie “Love Story for a new generation,” it's time to get out the hankies. When it wins the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, it's time to pay attention.
Director Drake Doremus (Douchebag) radically changes gears with this emotionally charged look at the hope and heartbreak of love. The conflict at its heart is simple: a British college student (newcomer Felicity Jones) and her American classmate (Anton Yelchin) fall head over heels, but they are not destined to live happily ever after. When the spring semester ends, Anna violates the terms of her visa by staying on in the States for the summer, in order to be near Jacob. Sent home to London and barred from re-entering America, she's as distraught as he is. Naturally, the young lovers try to maintain their relationship with an ocean between them. But when Jacob, who's slipped up with a pretty coworker, visits Anna in England and they get married on a whim, all kinds of suspicion and jealousy begin to poison their bliss.
Doremus and his cowriter, Ben York Jones, spread their couple’s endangered romance across five years, and as the equally beautiful Anna and Jacob age (a tribute to the makeup department), we behold the ways in which first love enthralls and, in the end, devastates. Featuring Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, SDFF33) as the beauty Jacob cheats with.—BILL GALLO
