A trendy architect gives keys to a new apartment to his four closest friends on one condition: their wives must not find out. The proposition is met with equal parts enthusiasm and scorn, but the pact is made and the secret kept. When one of them discovers the blood-covered body of a woman handcuffed to the loft’s oft-used bed, they exchange stories in an attempt to discover if they are being set up or if the killer is among them.
Dutch filmmaker Antoinette Beumer deftly remakes this twist-filled and chronologically disjointed thriller from the namesake Belgian hit by Erik Van Looy. Her film is populated with more suspects than heroes and even the noblest of the quintet is not above suspicion or reproach. As the truth unfolds, the men expose themselves as cheats, hypocrites, and even borderline sociopaths who are just as likely to band together for protection as they are to turn on each other to escape blame. The wives and mistresses they use share the emotional fallout of their secrets and their decision to cover up the murder of the woman whose identity remains hidden through most of the film.—MARK ANTONATION
