The Manassas High School Tigers haven’t won a playoff game in more than a century. The inner-city schoolkids who make up the team are just as likely to end up in jail as college, and they lack funding and morale no less than ticks in the victory column. The 2009 season, however, is starting to look up, thanks not least to volunteer coach Bill Courtney and star left tackle O. C. Brown. Brown is counting on a college scholarship, but struggling to earn the grades to qualify. His teammates Chavis Daniels, who just got out of an 18-month stint in juvie, and Montrail “Money” Brown, a pitbull of a right tackle, are right there with him.
Part Hoop Dreams, part Friday Night Lights, this documentary is unsparing in its exploration of Memphis’s urban blight as it trickles down through the school and into the soul of the team. But the inspirational figure of Coach Courtney and the never-say-never style of filmmakers Dan Lindsay and T.J. Martin make Undefeated aclear winner in the end.
