Five stories touch lightly on one another in this gently tragicomic fable about loneliness. Relationships change over the course of 24 hours as the camera captures lives unfolding in a city in the Netherlands. Characters face their aloneness as the bonds between them and their loved ones are strained, and they have to muster new resources to deal with new realities. A woman reluctantly helps her mother arrange her own suicide, but can’t admit how devastated she is until she has to deal with her own daughter. A paraplegic former soccer star who’s been in rehab for months must now face the world; he can’t go home again, but he isn’t comfortable with his new disabled friends. A husband and father leading a double life flees home on his wedding anniversary, but finds only fleeting happiness in the kiss of a new lover. An aging couple must come to grips with what they want out of life and what they want with each other, after a disturbing visit from their autistic son. A breezy, hip couple who could have walked right out of a cell phone commercial feel mutual discontent over their differences, and find the gap widening when the death of a stranger intervenes in their lives.
