Even those unfamiliar with director Ingmar Bergman’s acclaimed body of work are likely to find Liv & Ingmar enthralling. It’s the five-decade story of two friends and artistic collaborators: legendary actress and master filmmaker. Dheeraj Akolkar’s documentary is divided into chapters: “Love,” “Rage,” “Pain,” “Longing,” “Friendship.” The relationship began as a love affair when Ullmann appeared in Bergman’s 1966 Persona. She was 20 years his junior. Both were married at the time, but the passion between them couldn’t be contained—at least for the moment. “Our love originated from the loneliness we both felt,” Ullmann says. “We bound ourselves emotionally, not only sexually.” But things changed when they moved in together. Bergman became very controlling, and the house became a prison. They had a child together, but to Ullmann, “my daughter's father needed to live his own life.” She struggled to maintain their romantic relationship, which lasted a little more than three years. Only when it ended did they become true friends, remaining so over the course of many more films until Bergman’s death in 2007. - STEVE BELGARD Click here for Information on Group Rates and Discounts!
