Tired of waiting for “Mr. Right” to come into her life, thirtysomething yoga instructor Jenn (Jenn Harris) invites her gay best friend, comic-book artist Matt (Matthew Wilkas), to fulfill an old college proposition by fathering a child with her “the old fashioned way.” This decision takes their inner circle by surprise, including their sassy co-workers and Jenn’s barren sister, who is dealing with a complicated adoption, but no one is more surprised than Jenn and Matt, who assumed they would only need one try to conceive. Suddenly the duo find themselves juggling ovulations, career shifts and blocks, unwarranted opinions, and a bizarre spike in both of their love lives that might put to the test the very notion that Jenn and Matt have made the right decision in taking control of their futures and the future of their unborn gayby. An irreverent comedy about friendship and the family that we chose, Gayby was an audience favorite at our Cinema Q film festival this year and warranted an additional screening. Delivering a gay film that exists in the post-gay idea that the “new normal” family can correctly be rewritten, Gayby instead focuses not on the tired concerns of a gay father/straight mother dynamic but instead in the human dynamic that gives this film its real bite.
