Branson, Missouri, has for decades been a hot spot for tourists seeking family-friendly entertainment. In We Always Lie to Strangers, AJ Schnack and David Wilson show the lives of the town’s performers on and off the stage over a period of two and half years. We meet a variety of vibrant personalities that make Branson what it is: characters such as Chip, a gay dancer raising two boys, and Elisha, a performer doing 30-second costume changes. We also meet acts such as the Lennon Family, Showstoppers, the Magnificent Variety Show, and Presleys’ Country Jubilee. Old mixes with new as the town’s values are challenged. Tradition aside, Branson is adapting to modern times, and the town struggles accordingly. This documentary remains lighthearted despite the deeper issues being presented.
