My Dear Enemy Showing: Saturday, November 14, 7:15 PM Running Time: 124 Minutes Theater: Starz FilmCenter
South Korean director Lee Yoon-ki has a sure feel for the pangs of young hearts, and in this offbeat comedy he reveals the exquisite friction between a no-nonsense realist, Hee-soo (Jeon Do-youn), and her dreamy ex-boyfriend, Byoung-woon (Ha Jung-woo), from whom she is trying to collect an old debt. In the course of one eventful day, the two traverse the teeming streets of Seoul as the penniless charmer tries to drum up the funds from friends under her watchful, if not stern, gaze. But as day wears on into night, the one-time couple gingerly begins to come to terms with their checkered romantic past. The sheer talent of Jung-woo and Do-youn – who won Best Actress at Cannes in 2007 for her work in Secret Sunshine – comes to light as the pair shares virtually every scene in close proximity. But My Dear Enemy also makes a star of Seoul itself – a fascinating city that Lee renders as vividly as Woody Allen does New York or Barry Levinson does Baltimore.
