35mm presentation - Embittered Caleb (Adam Scott) has a cruel streak and a vulgar, take-no-prisoners sense of humor. Trying to recover from a difficult breakup, he finds solace only in pure, unfettered misogyny. A construction worker by trade, he is estranged from his family and maintains a fairly isolated lifestyle. Though he lives two miles away from his father – J. K. Simmons of Juno (SDFF 30) in a small but stellar turn – they haven’t spoken since the death of his mother eight years ago.
But Caleb has agreed to chauffeur his sunny, likable brother Peter (Alex Frost) and Peter’s new girlfriend, Emma (Brittany Snow) home for Thanksgiving. In a memorably nasty rant at a diner en route, Caleb trashes all women everywhere, including their mother and Emma. But his arrogant disdain for the opposite sex is sorely tested as he finds himself drawn to Emma – compelled as much to try and protect his brother from yet another cunning female as to betray him with her himself. Caleb is the weird driver behind the train wreck of a family reunion that ensues, one that will test everyone’s characters and find them all wanting. The scenario makes you squirm – but it also makes you laugh.
At the ripe young age of 24, writer/director Lee Toland Krieger offers a pungent, disturbing slice of life in his second feature. Neil LaBute executive produced, and it shows – not only in the caustic spirit of the piece but in its clever, harrowing exchanges. Scott, who is known for his roles in Step Brothers, Knocked Up, and HBO’s Six Feet Under, also stars in SDFF 32’s Passenger Side.
