33rd STARZ DENVER FILM FESTIVAL & CANADIAN CONSULATE CELEBRATE LONG-RUNNING PARTNERSHIP

11/11/2010
Tonight’s Reception Honors Collaborations with our Neighbors to the North, including Environment in Focus, Casino Jack & More

Celebrating a long-running partnership with the Consulate General of Canada, the Denver Film Society will host a Canadian Reception tonight at the Four Seasons Hotel, located at 1111 14th St. in downtown Denver. The event will be held from 8:30pm to 10:30pm in the Grand Ballroom Foyer. Guests of honor will include Consul General of Canada Dale Eisler and Canadian director Éric Tessier, whose psychological thriller 5150 Elm's Way (5150, Rue des Ormes) will screen this weekend as part of SDFF33’s program, The Watching Hour.

In addition to 5150 Elm's Way, the Consulate supports all 11 Canadian films screening at SDFF33 including feature-length co-productions Casino Jack (Canada-U.S.) directed by George Hickenlooper and Dog Pound (Canada-France) directed by Kim Chapiron. The Consulate also supports the four feature films screening in the Environment in Focus program, as a way to educate audiences about numerous bilateral agreements Canada and the United States share to protect our common environment.

Environmental advocacy has become a powerful cultural touchstone; as such, it is a core concern for the Starz Denver Film Festival. The Environment in Focus program features cutting-edge documentaries and events that are intended to bring like-minded people together, and inspire audiences to make a difference through their interactions with the natural world.

"By drawing attention to environmental issues through our films and events, we hope to further environmental education and awareness," said Britta Erickson, SDFF director. "In addition to focusing on the importance of sustainable practices, we put these efforts into action as well by making eco-friendly decisions throughout the Festival, and we seek to partner with organizations that make similar commitments to the stewardship of our shared environment.”

“This is the sixth year in a row that the Consulate has partnered with the Starz Denver Film Festival, and it’s an event we look forward to each year,” said Consul Carol Markham, who manages the Consulate’s Political, Economic and Public Affairs program. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strong ties that our two countries share, as friends, as partners and as co-creators. Take our film industries, for instance. Flathead Wild and Casino Jack are just two examples of successful Canadian-US collaborations. The first resulted in an agreement between British Columbia and Montana to protect a pristine environmental area spanning our borders, and the second an entertaining film. In fact I’m told by George Hickenlooper’s Canadian partners that while filming Casino Jack, he made more friends in Canada than many people make in a lifetime! I know he will be greatly missed by his new friends up north."
