Love Is Love
Láska je láska
Czech Republic, 2012, 108 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Comedy, Romance
Program: Contemporary World Cinema
Czech director Mila Cieslar’s wry, observant comedy explores all kinds of love caught up in all kinds of weather: parental love that would smother its children, forbidden gay love struggling to survive, long-lost love rekindled, blind love that comes to see clearly.
The fascinating couples of the piece include a pretty 18-year-old pianist (Aneta Krejcíková) who lost her sight at 10 and now finds herself in the arms of a dark gypsy boy (Maciej Cymorek) she imagines to be blue-eyed and blond; an overprotective grandfather (Petr Nárožný) who rediscovers the rebellious flame of his youth (Eliška Balzerová), now on the edge of dementia but still smoking pot and evading the police; a “wayward” gay son (Petr Vancura) whose own mother carts him off to a brothel so he can take the cure. A brilliant ensemble cast provides some masterful interplay, and screenwriter Martin Horský gives each troubled character, old or young, almost exactly the right things to say. That also goes for the gay boy’s wonderfully comic parents—the mild-mannered soccer fan (Ondrej Vetchý) who must conceal his enthusiasm even as he offers his son unconditional love, and the overbearing mother (Simona Stašová), grotesque in her bedtime mud-mask, who cannot accept reality.
A graduate of the world-renowned Prague Film School, Cieslar has been directing films since 1985 and has been frequently represented at festivals with such audience favorites as Dirty Soul (2003), A Snowy Night (2009) and Sign of the Horse (2011).
