USA, 2012, 82 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Drama, Romance
Programs: New Directors Showcase, Reel Social Club
Both traveling for work, in a city in which neither lives, a man (Chris Messina) and a woman (Marin Ireland) recognize each other across a hotel dining room. Months earlier, shortly before her wedding, they spent an erotic night together in what they thought was a one-night stand. They wind up in bed together a second time … and then again—and again, in a series of different hotel rooms in different cities, over a period of years. He, too, eventually marries, but they continue to meet when his work as a novelist and hers as a corporate accountant take them to various cities. Their intense attraction slowly evolves into a relationship so profound that they realize it may be the one that matters most. The film explores the irresistible magnetism between its two unnamed characters, and the painful and confusing situation in which they find themselves.

In his feature directorial debut, actor Matt Ross takes a very character-oriented approach to filmmaking, following lengthy discussions with friend and actor colleague Messina, one of the film’s executive producers. Ross, Messina, and Ireland all bring theater experience to this very artistic endeavor. In an Indiewire interview, Ross said he was blessed with “kick-ass” producers. Doug Emmett’s skilled camerawork lends a distinctive “foreign film” feel to the scenes shot in the contained settings of unspectacular hotel rooms. Each scene moves the story abruptly forward as the couple develop new levels of intimacy during their brief periods together.
