Kaneto Shindo has capped his illustrious 60-year career with perhaps his most passionate and personal work. The Japanese master's 49th film begins in 1944 as a young soldier is shipping out for the front. Foreseeing his own demise, he charges homeward bound Keita with delivering a message to his wife, Tomoko. When Keita finally locates Tomoko, she's fallen victim to two tragedies. While she yearns for companionship, the grievous losses he's suffered leave him reluctant to connect with anyone ever again. While the ravages of war have long fascinated Shindo, Postcard is directly inspired by the filmmaker's own wartime experience of being one of only six survivors from his 100-man company. “I have always had the souls of the 94 with me and have made them the theme of my existence,” the 99-year-old director says. Employing a compelling mix of dark humor, soaring melodrama, and rich thematics, Shindo not only pays tribute to those lost lives, but also to the wounded left behind to pick up the pieces.

DIRECTOR: Kaneto Shindo
