Dylan (Nils Verkooijen) is an ordinary, mildly discontented 15-year-old who is far more interested in rehearsing with his band and hanging out with his girlfriend than he is in keeping his family commitments. When he blows off his two mothers, his biological mom, Emma (Anneke Blok), and her longtime partner, Ilse (Marieke Heebink), a disagreement ensues that ends with Emma accidently injuring herself while chasing after her insubordinate son. With Emma hospitalized, Ilse sends the teen to live with his long-absent father, Sjors (Marcel Musters). Sjors is thrilled to spend time with Dylan, while Emma convalesces, though he is hesitant to be honest about the young man’s identity with his live-in partner, Bert (Mark Ram).

Moving from his mother’s household to that of his father, Dylan remains resistant to making any effort, whether at home or in the classroom—apart, once again, from his music. This latter interest will provide common ground for Dylan and the straitlaced Bert, who ultimately rescues the teen from academic expulsion.

Over time, Sjors and Bert prove a second set of parents who are loathe to send Dylan back to his mothers once Emma regains her health. One last night of irresponsibility, prompted by a melodramatic disclosure, brings Sjors and Bert and Emma and Ilse together as a concerned parental foursome. In the end, the deftly comic 20 Lies is about learning how to be a family, whatever that might mean in 21st-century Holland.
