Honored with a celebrated Silver Bear prize at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, this dryly comic French-Canadian feature centers on Victoria and Florence, a same-sex couple seeking refuge in the remote forests of Quebec. The 61-year-old Vic (Pierrette Robitaille) arrives first, taking up residence with her paralyzed uncle after receiving parole from her life prison sentence. Her troubled younger lover, Flo (Romane Bohringer), joins her shortly thereafter, for reasons that only later will become clear. In the meantime, the misanthropic Victoria tolerates her unorthodox parole officer (Marc-Andre Grondin) and strikes up a friendship with an offbeat townie, while the bisexual Flo spends her days at a local bar.

Florence’s past, however, does catch up to her in what will prove a spectacularly sadistic, and rather hard-to-watch, episode—an incident that is very obliquely referenced in the film’s title. Here, the exceedingly talented former critic and occasional documentarian Denis Cote breaks most decisively from any form of realism, opting instead to close Vic+Flo with a flamboyantly surreal flourish. Then again, even in the more naturalistic set-pieces that precede this powerful scene—those which Cote captures through an alternating economy of mobile setups and conspicuously static long shots—the filmmaker does affect an atmosphere of uncertainty and lingering dread, a sense that he imparts in no small measure through his mysterious and menacing cast of locals.

Vic+Flo confirms the New Brunswick-born Cote as one of the art cinema’s major emerging talents.
