Micheal Noer follows up his 2010 prison film R with a new Danish drama following two brothers through the rough, crime-ridden area of Northwest. Casper (Gustav Dyekjaer Giese) is an 18-year-old who burgles homes to make money for his family. After turning his back on Jamal, a low-level neighborhood thug, Casper begins working for big player Bjorn and is thrown into a darker world of drugs and prostitution. He and his younger brother Andy (real-life brother Oscar Dyekjaer Giese) are challenged morally and must choose whether to go toward the darkness or stay in the light.

Noer captures the racial and territorial tensions of the area through character interaction. The director brings back Roland Møller and Dulfi Al-Jabouri from R to play competing gang leaders Bjorn and Jamal. Noer chose unknowns to play the two brothers of the film. The connection between Casper and Andy feels authentic. Noer reminds the audience that the two are just young boys. Family is essential despite the larger actions of the protagonist. Casper cares deeply for his family; he spends the money he earns on his siblings and mother, and brings his younger brother into the fold as a last resort.

The film revolves around the conflict of a young man with few opportunities who is faced with choosing crime over what is morally correct. Northwest captures the transformation of two boys into men. Casper and Andy must choose their paths and what kind of men they want to become.
