It all started at a frat-house reunion in 1965. Simon Spies, a travel agency owner with a serious satyriasis complex, is impressed by comrade Mogen Glistrup’s barristerial brilliance. They form an unlikely alliance, concocting a plan to overtake a greedy airline based on Glistrup’s “The Emperor Has No Clothes” theory. When successful, they set out to revolutionize all of Denmark.

Spies (Pilou Asbaek) wants to make airline travel (including jaunts to Majorca) affordable for everyone, not just the privileged class. Glistrup (Nicolas Bro) believes paying taxes is immoral and publicly crusades for tax evasion, running for office and forming his own “Progress Party.” The two continue harmoniously throughout Simon’s marketing schemes—there’s a promotion on live TV where he has sex with numerous women to see who will be his girlfriend for the year—and his drug-induced sabbatical, including a showdown in which he awes a wild gorilla with his erect phallus. His megalomania about the ruling class making laws, then subverting them when they want to, turns out to be their undoing when he becomes what he set out to destroy.

Christoffer Boe takes complete cinematic liberty in reconstructing the lascivious milieu of 1960s-70s Denmark. Only in Europe could a filmmaker get away with making such a brazen biopic based on “real and unreal” events like these. Asbaek and Bro deliver outstanding performances in one fascinating and outrageous motion picture.
