A Coffee in Berlin

A Coffee in Berlin

Germany, 2012, 88 Minute Running Time
Language: German

ENDS THURSDAY at the Sie FilmCenter.

Writer/director Jan Ole Gerster's wry and vibrant feature debut, which swept the 2013 German Film Academy Awards, paints a day in the life of Niko (Tom Schilling, Generation War), a charming 27-year-old slacker guy going nowhere fast. During a single fateful day in Berlin Niko drifts aimlessly through a series of amusing encounters with oddball characters. His girlfriend rebuffs him, his father—finally discovering that Niko dropped out of law school two years ago—cuts off his allowance, and a strange psychiatrist dubiously confirms his "emotional imbalance." Niko runs into a former classmate (Katharina Schüttler) who insists she bears no hard feelings for his grade-school taunts when he called her "Roly Poly Julia," although it becomes increasingly apparent that she has unfinished business with him. Shot in timeless black and white and enriched with a snappy jazz soundtrack, this slacker dramedy is a love letter to Berlin, which has seldom looked more mysterious and romantic, and to the Generation Y experience. Also known as Oh Boy. Winner of the European Film Award for European Discovery of the Year.
