BANNED!:<br> Louis Malle's The Lovers

Louis Malle's The Lovers

France, 1958, 90 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Drama, Erotic
Language: French English Sub-Titles

Since September is "Banned Books Month," the Starz FilmCenter has decided to join in to mark one example of when the First Amendment has needed help with respect to movies. The history of attempts to shut down movies is nearly as old as the movies themselves. The 1896 Edison short, The Kiss, with a couple of proper, aged actors gently bussing on camera, brought forth cries that the movies must be censored or else they'll destroy civilization as we know it. Our program will feature Louis Malle's The Lovers, which was banned in a number of communities around the country. The film will be preceded by a 1917 Chaplin short, Easy Street, which may surprise the audience with its rather relaxed attitudes towards subjects that would now elicit howls of protest. Joining the discussion of the films will be First Amendment attorney Lino Lipinski.
