Viridiana (Sylvia Pinal) is about to become a nun, but first she visits a rich uncle who drugs her and wants to marry her – but finally doesn’t. So Viridiana then tries to become a better and more saintly person. Director Luis Bunuel is probably the one true life-long surrealist filmmaker. He hated the Church, the upper class and sanctimony, and his attacks on such things are simultaneously nasty and funny. Viridiana was the first film Bunuel had made in Spain 24 years. It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, but, of course, Franco’s Spain banned the picture.
