Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show

Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show

USA, 2007, 110 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Comedy, Documentary
Language: English

In its wink-wink unwieldiness, the title says it all. Combining three different genres – the documentary, the road-trip flick and the stand-up concert film – Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights – Hollywood to the Heartland Tour chronicles the grueling, kooky cross-country odyssey of four up-and-coming comedians as they star in a raucous variety show organized and hosted by actor Vince Vaughn. Inspired by the rootin'-tootin' extravaganzas of 19th-century frontiersman Buffalo Bill, the star of Swingers, Old School and Wedding Crashers managed to organize and book the tour in just four frenzied weeks in 2005; it kicked off one month later.

Like Vaughn himself, director Ari Sandel clearly delights in showcasing the unique talents of the performers, whose styles and preoccupations range from the political to the personal, the raunchy to the radical, the cerebral to the slapstick. Ahmed Ahmed draws on his Egyptian upbringing to skewer contemporary ethnic stereotypes, while Midwestern live wire John Caparulo displays his acerbic wit. The kinetic energies of Bret Ernst balance Sebastian Maniscalco's philosophical riffs on the absurdity of modern life. Of course, Vaughn's own comic gifts go on display as he emcees, spars with special guest stars in improvised sketches and presents fractured musical numbers.

Intercutting footage from their onstage romps with on-the-road sequences, Sandel introduces us to the men behind the acts as well – men committed to careers whose futures are as uncertain as they are exhilarating. Led by the affable rogue that is Vaughn, these troopers manage not merely to cope with the extreme pressures of the whirlwind tour but actually to enjoy what Maniscalco dubs “spring break for 30-year-olds.”
