35mm presentation - Forget milk and cookies: teen sex and violence is pop culture's most classic combination. Urban legends, cable melodramas and slasher pics all tack quickie morals onto their gleefully grotesque expositions of what happens to nubile minors when they get too randy. But in Mitchell Lichtenstein's Teeth, the genre convention gets a post-Freudian, postfeminist twist – and what a twist it is.
Meet Dawn, a sweet young Christian thing who leads her high school's chastity brigade. A stranger to her own developing body, Dawn doesn't fully comprehend why her boyfriend Tobey is suddenly turning up the pressure to have sex, nor why her creepy half-brother keeps giving her the eye. But when Tobey finally forces himself upon her she discovers the unique power her anatomy wields – and so, much to his horror, does he. With the built-in defense mechanism otherwise known as a vagina dentata at her disposal, Dawn must come to terms with its potential as both a blessing and a curse – even as she begins to walk the line between victim and avenger, heroine and hellraiser. Newcomer Jess Wexler's winningly steady performance ensures the film likewise maintains its balance between pitch-black comedy, coming-of-age satire and full-blown horror flick.
Lichtenstein, best known as an actor (Robert Altman's Streamers, Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet), marks his debut as a feature-length director.
