Jules (Frédéric Andréi), a young Parisian postman and opera lover, sneaks a Nagra recorder into the Paris Opera House to secretly capture the voice of Cynthia Hawkins (Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez), an African-American opera superstar, world-famous for her voice and her obstinate refusal to ever have it recorded. Unbeknownst to him, a doomed prostitute (Chantal Deruaz) has also deposited a tape in his mailbag, incriminating high-ranking police officials in the rackets. Jules is chased by cops, mobsters and Taiwanese record pirates, all while attempting a flirtatious romance with the unattainable Cynthia, and attracting the interest of the mysterious playboy Gorodish (Richard Bohringer) and his Vietnamese mistress Alba (Thuy An Luu). The sensational debut of director Jean-Jacques Beineix (Betty Blue) which launched the Cinéma du Look—the stylish, visually stunning and punkish French cinema of the '80s—Diva, after 25 years, remains a hip, exciting, high-speed Métro ride.
