A Celebration of Courage

A Celebration of Courage

2008 Starz FilmCenter Special Program:

A Celebration of Courage: The Little Rock 9
The Little Rock Nine were a group of African-American students who were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The ensuing Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from entering the racially segregated school by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus, and then attended after the intervention of President Dwight Eisenhower, was an important event in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. During the 50th anniversary year of this event, the Denver Film Society is partnering with the Iliff School of Theology and honoring these 9 courageous individuals who, by the simple act of going to school, contributed greatly to the civil rights movement in America. In conjunction with an exhibit: Heroes & Sheroes: The Story of the Little Rock Nine, at the Iliff School of Theology in January and at Wells Fargo Bank in February, 3 Films will be screened followed by discussion and a community gathering, as well as an opportunity for middle and high school children to participate.

NOTHING BUT A MAN
Michael Romer and Robert M. young, Directors (1964)
Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln play an unlikely young couple who must confront both the hostility of the outside world to an African-American couple, and the class differences between the two of them. The film is considered one of the finest explorations of African-American life on film - and Malcolm X's favorite movie. Nothing But a Man provides a sharp and touching look at racial conflict in America at exactly the same time as the integration of Little Rock's Central High School.
