XicanIndie XI

XicanIndie XI

El Centro Su Teatro, in collaboration with the Consulado General de Mexico and the Denver Film Society, proudly presents XicanIndie FilmFest XI: Latino World Cinema, April 2 – 5, 2009 at the Starz FilmCenter, 900 Auraria Parkway in Denver.

What began as a small celebration of independent Chicano filmmaking, has, in a decade’s time, become the foremost Latino film festival in the region. This year’s XicanIndie will feature the Denver premiere of an award-winning and riveting new film from director Alex Rivera, a beloved classic from Mexico’s golden age of cinema, a handful of exciting independent shorts, and a special tribute to legendary movie producer Moctesuma Esparza (The Milagro Beanfield War, Gettysburg, Walkout).

MOCTESUMA ESPARZA will be in attendance this year to accept the XicanIndie Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to American Filmmaking and his dedication to creating opportunities for Latinos in the entertainment industry. Mr. Esparza will be honored during a special opening night reception (April 2 at 6pm) hosted by Denver’s Mexican Consulate. The reception will be followed by the 7:30pm screening of one Mr. Esparza’s latest film projects, AMEXICANO.

Mr. Esparza will also introduce another of his company’s latest projects, SLEEP DEALER, at 7pm on Friday, April 3. Sleep Dealer, by genre-breaking new director Alex Rivera, won two prestigious awards at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival: the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize. Sleep Dealer also earned Rivera the 2008 Amnesty International Film Prize. Sleep Dealer is a haunting immigration tale about worker exploitation in a world of technology gone awry. Sleep Dealer is distributed by Mr. Esparza’s company, Maya Entertainment: http://www.mayareleasing.com/.

Other notable XicanIndie programming includes PROPIEDAD AJENA (The Land of Another), a sexy 2007 thriller about a Mexican woman’s search for her American roots; FLOR SILVESTRE, a classic 1943 film by legendary director Emilio “Indio” Fernandez that mixes love with revolution (starring screen favorites Dolores del Rio and Pedro Armenadriz); and an additional title from Maya Entertainment, AUGUST EVENING
