35mm presentation - In 2006, after attending a tribute to four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris, Logan and Noah Miller talked their way backstage, where they entreated the star to accept a key role in a movie they had promised their father they would make. On the strength of the trailer they showed him on their laptop, Harris generously agreed to look at the script – and ultimately gave them two weeks of his time at union scale. Armed with a Panavision New Filmmaker Grant, these self-taught twin brothers produced, wrote, directed, and acted in the resulting feature, a fictionalized account of their father’s last years in homelessness – and of their own struggles to realize their dreams against the backdrop of his self-destruction.
As children, the Miller brothers took refuge from their father’s often violent outbursts in two things: baseball and movies. These come together in Touching Home. Their characters, Lane and Clint, are Major League prospects who return to their home in northern California when their hopes are dashed. There, they try to regroup, working alongside their father and his ne’er-do-well pals at a rock quarry and enduring the challenges of their own questionable friends, who want to cut them down to size. Navigating the ins and outs of this small-town, working-class existence, still unwilling to scrap their plans for a life in baseball, they wrestle with their own demons and those of their father, wondering if their love for him amounts to self-sabotage.
The Millers conjured further sterling support for what has been hailed as an inspirational story of resilience and passion in the form of editing by Robert Dalva (The Black Stallion; Jumanji; Hidalgo), coaching by Academy Award–winning film editor and sound designer Walter Murch, sound editing by three-time Oscar winner Richard Hymns, and a screening at Skywalker Ranch.
