This conclusion to a trilogy by Mexican experimental filmmaker Julián Hernández juxtaposes scenes of a present-day world in black and white with dreamy color tableaux set in a mythological place inhabited by heroes. Two young men, Ryo and Kieri, have a joyful encounter in a rundown cinema. But when the jealous Tari intervenes and abducts Ryo, the three move into another dimension. With the guidance of a goddess named Corazón del Cielo (Heaven’s Heart), Kieri goes in search for his love, eventually finding him in the cave where Tari has left him – but death has preceded his rescue. Out of selfless love, Kieri offers his own life in exchange for the return of Ryo’s – an act the gods judge worthy of immortal reward.
Though he shuns all dialogue, the sheer strength of his faith in ravishing sensuality allows Hernández to create real intimacy between richly depicted characters whose stunning physical beauty might otherwise seem superficial. Remarkable cinematography by Alejandro Cantú combines with a spare soundtrack to tell the lovers’ story in the most artful of ways. Raging Sun, Raging Sky won the prestigious Teddy for best feature-length gay-themed film at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival – as did its 2003 predecessor in the trilogy, A Thousand Clouds of Peace (which was preceded in turn by Broken Sky).
