Robert Flaherty is the first great documentary filmmaker, and while the “documentariness” of the film is questionable, its beauty is overwhelming. The movie takes place on Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands to the west of Ireland. It’s about the struggle to survive in difficult conditions, and that can be an understatement.
