35mm presentation - Thirty-somethings Theo (Chris Messina) and Nat (Rashida Jones) are engaged. He’s a wedding photographer, she’s an aspiring singer/songwriter, and together they live a picturesque life in a sprawling New York loft. To supplement his modest income before the wedding, Theo hatches a service bound to appeal to exhibitionists: he takes candid shots of his clients on the sly. He names it Gumshoot, creating a role for himself as a kind of private detective, stalking his clients to give them an outsider’s view of their own lives.
What begins innocently, if oddly, enough quickly takes a dangerous new turn when Theo is approached by Subgirl (Meital Dohan), who asks him to photograph her in a park. He takes the job, only to find that the client in question is not shy about pleasuring herself al fresco, in broad daylight. At first he’s stunned, but when Subgirl contacts him again, he’s hooked. Though Nat seems to take the first set of pictures more or less in stride, his continuing involvement with the beautiful blonde inevitably comes between them. As Theo chases her through dark alleys to catch her in the act with her latest conquest, doubts about marrying Nat can’t help but surface, and his increasing obsession rocks the relationship hard.
With nods to both Blow-up and The Conversation, this drama, appropriately shot with handheld cameras, is an intense meditation on desire and commitment, made all the more poignant by great onscreen chemistry between Messina and Jones. Dana Adam Shapiro, best known for the Oscar-nominated 2005 documentary Murderball, cowrote and directed.
