At the end of Elm’s Way, in an idyllic collegiate suburb, lies a charming house where a presumably average family basks in the warmth of the hearth. After student filmmaker Yannick takes a spill on a bike ride through the neighborhood (perhaps he should have heeded the black cat he nearly ran over more closely), he knocks on the door of the Beaulieu home for a little first aid—only to find himself in a scrape that makes his accident seem like a paper cut.

Yannick has just interrupted the man of the house, Jacques, in the act of dispensing some justice to a local drug dealer. The fanatical Christian has sentenced his victim to the death of the wicked, a fate that Yannick assumes will befall him as well. Instead, he’s held captive in the spare room while Jacques sets up a series of tests to determine if the young man is righteous and therefore deserving of his life—or not. To add fuel to the hellfire, Yannick must contend with the rest of the Beaulieu clan: Maude, Jacques’s wife, who quietly wishes her husband would let the boy go—but for her own selfish reasons; daughter Sarah, who sees Yannick as an attractive new pet of sorts; and Michelle, her older sister, who takes after her father—and views Yannick as a threat to the throne of his crusading empire.

As the days go by and his mental state begins to deteriorate, Yannick begins to weigh his options: can he free himself from this nightmare, or should he settle in and make 5150 Elm’s Way his new permanent address? Éric Tessier directs this Canadian psychological thriller.
