Paul Robeson plays the lead in a film version of the play by Eugene O’Neill. He’s simply an incredible, electric performer. Dudley Murphy, the director, began filmmaking with the avant garde in Paris in the 20s, and the avant-garde influence is all over this film. It’s uneven – sometimes extraordinary – and always fascinating.
