“The River” comes from a novel by Rumer Godden about an English family living along the banks of the Ganges, and in the hands of Jean Renoir the story is translated wonderfully into color and rhythm. For the most part, the English can’t quite become part of the civilization they’ve tried to dominate. They stand out by their manner of dress; they move too hastily and abruptly for the pace of life dictated by the river, and they resist the Indian understandings of the processes of life and death. The great French critic André Bazin calls “The River” a masterpiece. The film will be shown in a gorgeous 35mm print.
