Do The Movies Still Matter - February 23
90 Minute Running Time
In December, Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi wrote a column in which he proclaimed television "the place to explore the American cultural and political experience." Harsanyi, of course, isn't the first writer to suggest that movies have lost much of their cultural primacy, but it's an observation that can't -- and shouldn't -- be dismissed. On Feb. 23rd, Harsanyi and Channel 4 entertainment writer and critic Greg Moody will join Salon curator Robert Denerstein in an attempt to assess the position movies occupy in our increasingly fragmented and balkanized culture. On the eve of the Academy Awards, we'll ask a question that certainly won't be raised during Hollywood's annual orgy of self-congratulation: "Do movies still matter?" Join us for what promises to be one of our liveliest and most provocative Cinema Salons yet.
