Digital presentation - Hineini: Coming Out in a Jewish High School tells the story of one student’s efforts to establish a gay-straight student alliance at a pluralistic Jewish high school in the Boston area and the transformative impact of her campaign for greater awareness, visibility, and change. Shulamit Izen, entered the 9th grade at the New Jewish High School (now the Gann Academy) with a longing to learn more about Judaism. She also started school, from day one, as an out lesbian. Shulamit’s story is not simply another coming out story. It is the story of a Jewish community navigating the cross-currents of Jewish tradition and social change.
Using interviews with Shulamit, her family, teachers, and other students – both those who supported her campaign and those who opposed it – the video allows the members of this community to tell their own story. What emerges is a story of Jewish pluralism and age-old questions of negotiating conflicts between tradition and modernity. Debate and dialogue around issues of GLBT identity and inclusion are occurring today across the Jewish religious spectrum. This film offers a vital framework for such discussions.
Hineini: Coming Out in a Jewish High School chronicles a chapter in American Jewish life, and in the wider world, that is now unfolding. Our hope is that the film sparks dialogue and pushes the boundaries of inclusion in all our communities.
Keshet staff will lead a discussion and Q&A immediately following the screening.
