Digital presentations - First come the NOTS. Silent film movement was and is NOT herky-jerky; the films are NOT naïve, stupid or boring.
Most important, silent film is NOT film without sound. It’s not missing anything.
Silent film IS film made in silence, and what silence brings to film is a heightened sense of the poetic, the dreamy and a world just a bit disconnected from daily reality. By the end of the silent period (1927-29), the cinema had become as visually rich and complex and full of nuance as it would ever be. Silent film is emotionally full, and most of all, silent film is often incomparably beautiful.
Silents 101 is a brief introduction to the beauty and delight of silent film, by way of getting us all primed for the first Denver Silent Film Festival.
