South Korea, 2010, 100 Minute Running Time
Genre/Subjects: Crime, Cult, Drama, Korean, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Language: Korean English Sub-Titles

Cho-in (Gang Dong-won) has special powers that allow him to control anyone he can see. His heart hardened by childhood trauma, he trusts no one and uses his abilities only for malicious gain. Kyu-nam (Ko Soo) is an average Joe who works in a pawn shop called Utopia. He is friendly and hard-working, living a humble but happy life. When Cho-in attempts one of his routine robberies at Utopia, he is shocked to find that Kyu-nam is the only person he has ever met whom he cannot control. Of course, Kyu-nam is equally horrified, as in the course of the robbery an innocent person is killed.

Both men’s lives are to be forever changed after that fateful day. Cho-in, who has always lived in secrecy, is now exposed; and once-passive Kyu-nam turns aggressor in his quest to stop his evil counterpart. Despite Cho-in’s considerable powers, he has difficulty staying hidden from the relentless Kyu-nam, who eventually enlists the help of his two best friends (Enes Kaya and Abu Dodd) to embark on an action-packed, epic hunt to track down this mysterious man.

Crisply directed by Kim Min-suk, Haunters has all the makings of a summer blockbuster at first glance—but the well-developed characters remain front and center, never overwhelmed by the use of CGI (which is kept to a minimum). Hong Kyung-pyo's striking cinematography adds depth, making this Korean thriller a satisfying chase to the end.
