35mm presentation - From writers Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) and Canadian cult director Michael Dowse (Fubar I and II) comes this hilarious tale that just may knock Slap Shot off its skates as the best comedy ever to tackle the topic of hockey.
Meet Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott), an aimless bouncer at a zero club who is scouted for a minor-league hockey slot after he uses his fists to pummel a visiting player who rudely breaks into the crowd shouting homophobic slurs. The coach likes the cut of his jib, and throws Doug on the ice to protect aging and puck-shy player Xavier Laflamme (Marc-Andre Grondin) from all aggressors, including Doug’s hockey idol, Ross “The Boss” Rhea (Liev Schreiber). Ross, who has recently been demoted to the minors, has his stick set squarely on Doug and his charge.

Off the ice, Doug tries to navigate the social mores of his new world, including the affections of a horny-but-taken young lady (the always awesome Alison Pill) and a friendship with his biggest fan and pal (played by writer Baruchel), who tries to make sure that Doug’s eyes are on the prize—and that his fists are buried deep in his opponents’ skulls.
Hockey is a blood sport, and Goon provides plenty of both—the fast-paced action and close-up violence that hockey fans really pay to see. There are moments that rival Raging Bull’s bone-crackingly realistic head shots and crimson showers. No foul here, then—Goon delivers what hockey fans have been craving on the big screen since Paul Newman knocked a puck into viewer’s hearts in 1977.
