Martha Marcy May Marlene

Martha Marcy May Marlene stars Elizabeth Olsen - in a stunning debut - as Martha, a damaged woman haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia. Director Sean Durkin - winner of the Best Director Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival – has crafted a bold and carefully observed tale of psychological suspense that is also a profound meditation on identity, vulnerability and the hunger for family in forms both delicate and dangerous.
After escaping a rural cult-like commune lead by the fatherly but manipulative Patrick (John Hawkes), Martha faces a uncertain future and is consumed by a mysterious burden of guilt as she tries to assimilate back into the real world and reconnect with her long estranged sister, Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and Lucy’s husband, Ted (Hugh Dancy). Martha may have run away, but she still is held captive as her new surroundings clash with everything she is feeling. Her perception of time and place has been disrupted, and as the narrative takes apart the boundaries between present and past we follow her descent into madness.
The damage that burdens Martha is evident in every superbly framed shot and the film’s final frame will leave you chilled.
