35mm presentation - In this Francois Truffaut thriller, Jeanne Moreau stars as a woman whose fiancé is nastily murdered by five men. Utilizing a series of disguises, the cool-customer Moreau tracks down all five culprits, sexually enslaves them, and then engineers their deaths. Not the typical turn of events for a Truffaut film but a welcome zig in a career full of fantastic zags. The ominous musical score was written by Bernard Herrmann, a frequent Hitchcock collaborator and the screenplay was based on the novel by Cornell Woolrich whose many dark and twisty novels were brought to life by Hitchcock as well. While watching this stylish gem of revenge and violence you may notice just how many of Truffaut’s fingerprints are all over Quentin Tarantino’s equally fun and vicious KILL BILL films making THE BRIDE WORE BLACK a wonderful and exciting genre staple worthy of being cribbed from.
