“They” say that Chaplin stole the beginning of Modern Times from this film by René Claire. Claire’s response was to say that if Chaplin did that, he (Claire) was honored. Two men become friends in prison; later they become friends on the outside, but it’s not so simple. The film is funny, satirical and political, not unlike Chaplin.
DIRECTOR: René Clair
