One of the great early examples of cinema verité, or what the Maysles brothers and others called “direct cinema.” What they do is observe, with as little effect on their subjects as possible. The result here is at times chilling and grim, as the film watches four unhappy men pushing Bibles and plenty of guilt on the devout and the naïve.
