Renoir is as good as it gets. He nudges his characters into action, and he watches. His films have neither heroes nor villains, just the brilliant vision of the complexity of human life. Boudu (Michel Simon), a homeless tramp, leaps into the Seine. A bookseller jumps in after him and pulls him to safety – and what’s this uptight shopkeeper going to do with him now, this uncivilized man who wipes his shoes with the drapes and leches after both wife and maid? An utterly brilliant, often hilarious movie.

DIRECTOR: Jean Renoir
Principal Cast: Michel Simon, Marcelle Hainia, Sévérine Lerczinska
