Onur Tukel wrote, directed, and stars in this quirky comedy about a motley group of friends headed to Central Park for a wedding. Tuna—sporting a suit with tags still attached—meets up with impatient Alex, and as the pair stroll through New York, they set the tone for the freewheeling dialogue that makes up the film. In the style of ensemble classics like The Big Chill, the friends in Richard’s Wedding riff on and on, with conversation ranging from the inane to the profound.
Alex and Tuna arrive at Russell’s apartment, and as drinks are served, the host’s newfound success (he created a best-selling app that Tasers the unsuspecting) becomes the topic of debate. More eccentric friends join the party, and the group meanders to Central Park while chatting, often at odds with one another. Old jealousies and rivalries surface, politics and religion join the list—no subject is taboo.
Bridal jitters turn into drama when Alex is phone-dumped, the preacher is a no-show, photographers duel, and storm clouds gather. Just when the wedding looks like a bust, Alex’s cousin, a certified online reverend fresh out of rehab, saves the day by performing the nuptials.
The friends, all faults and insecurities exposed, make a believable set of thirtysomethings still trying to make their way in the world. While their conversation often tilts toward the politically incorrect, these moments are softened by the reverse, a tenderness that shows what true friendship is about: acceptance.
