I, Anna

United Kingdom, 2012, 93 Minute Running Time
Additional Countries: Germany, France
Genre/Subjects: Drama, Thriller
Language: English

Though she seems adrift and plagued by a mysterious sense of loss, Anna goes about her days with gentle and cheerful efficiency, sharing time at home with her daughter and granddaughter, working at a department store, popping into telephone booths from time to time to make calls. She even makes it to a singles’ gathering. But her placid existence changes when she crosses paths with Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Reid early one morning in the lobby of a building where he’s been called to a murder scene. Reid is himself shell-shocked by a recent separation from his wife, and finds unexpected solace in Charlotte’s affable banter. He becomes obsessed with her, and even abuses his position to track her down, concocting a way for them to meet. At first they hit it off. But as his investigation proceeds, it slowly becomes clear that Anna has more to do with the crime than Bernie wants to believe. His professional judgment comes into question by his colleagues just as Anna is starting to unravel, and Bernie must choose how to handle despair—both Anna’s and his own.

Part psychological thriller, part film noir, I, Anna boasts a high-powered cast that includes Charlotte Rampling (Melancholia, The Damned), Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects, The Man in the Iron Mask), and Hayley Atwell, who starred in Captain America and The Duchess. Writer-director Barnaby Southcombe, who adapted the story from the novel by Elsa Lewin, cast his mother, Rampling, in the title role.
