Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) has just been released from eight months in a psychiatric facility after having beaten his wife’s lover to within an inch of his life. Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), an unstable young widow who’s been dealing with the pain of her loss by sleeping with every man she sees, offers to help Pat with his improbable quest to get back together with his wife (Brea Bee). The relationship that develops between these two psychotics becomes the silver lining to the problems they’re dealing with in this dramatic comedy. Having lost his wife, his house, and his job, Pat is living with his somewhat wacky parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver) in suburban Philadelphia. Along with wanting to help Pat get back on his feet, his mom and dad really want him to be as obsessed with the Philadelphia Eagles football team as they are.

In adapting Matthew Quick’s 2008 novel, writer-director David O. Russell (The Fighter) takes a long view Pat’s journey toward recovery as he explores one of his favorite subjects, the dysfunctional family. Fast-paced dialogue moves Cooper and Lawrence through banter, soul-baring, misunderstanding, and reconciliation in the span of a single scene, as shocked friends and family—supposedly saner than the protagonists—squirm at one awkward social situation after another. Masanobu Takayanagi’s hand-held camerawork and editor Jay Cassidy’s twitchy rhythms practically zoom into Pat’s busy, troubled, yet upbeat mind. Danny Elfman's music and the soundtrack supervised by Sue Jacobs thread in and out of the action, reflecting Pat's agitated mental condition.
